In the third blog of our Textile Care Icons Demystified Series, we will be looking at Ironing Icons. The ironing icon is always featured on MIP product labels, coming in 7 different versions. (see Ironing Icon Key below).
The suggested temperatures to apply to a textile when ironing is highlighted by dots in the iron icon, one dot indicates a low heat for delicate materials like wool and silk. 2 dots suggests medium heat for synthetic materials and 3 dots suggest a high heat for materials like linen and cotton. If an X is over the top of the iron icon this mean the textile is not to be ironed.
Applying the wrong temperatures on textiles when ironing can either lead to the textile taking longer for creases to iron out or lead to the melting or damage of the textile. Most MIP bed pads and clothing protectors are non-iron textiles as the heat from the iron can lead the PVC or PU backing of these products to melt and damage the soaker layer inhibiting the performance of the product.
Our slide sheet range and Swift In-Bed Repositioning System are non-iron products as the iron can damage the silicone coating of the material compromising the slippiness and performance of the sheets when moving and handling a patient. The WhooTex material in our Swift System helps negate this through its non-iron and no fold properties to help avoid creases.
There are more iron icons below highlighted in the key, however these aren’t featured commonly on textile labels or MIP labels.
