Elm Lodge Care Home Takes Dementia Care to a New Level with VR

Posted by on

Last December, as part of our Christmas Campaign, we embarked on a mission to give back to our local community in Leighton Buzzard. With the help and benignity of our Christmas Campaign Ambassador and employee, Michelle Middleweek, she has helped the efforts of Activity Coordinator, Talia at Elm Lodge Care Home in her mission to take a new approach to dementia care with the donation of a new VR Headset.

Virtual Reality is a new and very well-established tool to help promote wellbeing, mood and reduce stress and anxiety levels and they are currently being used in care homes all over the US, Elm Lodge Care Home is now one of the first in the UK!

Talia and her husband Peter were pivotal in introducing Virtual Reality into Elm Lodge who helped set up the headset and ensured it integrated seamlessly with the residents.

With this headset, the Elm Lodge team will have access to an array of VR games and experiences to support both physiotherapy and reminiscing therapy for residents living with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Residents, regardless if they are mobile or non-mobile, will be able to experience a series of games and visit sentimental locations to help evoke memories and reminisce with fellow residents.

“We are extremely pleased to make such as difference in our local community, by not only giving back, but helping transform the way Elm Lodge approach dementia care and we will look to continue to support them on their journey in enhancing the well-being of their residents.” commented Paul Crabtree, Managing Director.
