As part of the second blog of our Textile Care Icons Demystified Series, we will be looking at Drying Icons. The main drying icon you will predominantly see on MIP labels is the tumble drying icon, this is denoted as a square with a round circle inside (see Drying Icon Key below).
The heat setting to use when tumble drying is highlighted by dots in the tumble drying icon, with one dot meaning low heat and 3 dots meaning high heat. Understanding these drying icons is essential, as like with washing icons, incorrect drying can lead to the damage of your textiles. Drying textiles on too high a heat, for too long or leaving the textile in the dryer long after the drying cycle has ended, can over dry the fabric. This will lead to excess shrinkage and the fabric will become brittle, subject to damage and will greatly reduce it’s lifespan
If an X is indicated over the top of this icon, this means it is not to be tumble dried. These items are usually only to be dried either on the line, flat, in the shade or normally. There are care icons to highlight these, however these aren’t featured commonly on textile labels like tumble drying icons.
